Beloved Local Basketball Coach, Damion “Coach D” Staple, Needs Support After Suffering Stroke
Hi, my name is Gregg Menell and I’m a longtime resident of Westchester, New York. I first met Damion Staple—better known as “Coach D”—when he coached my daughter’s middle school basketball team nearly a decade ago (I was one of the parent coaches). From the moment he stepped into the gym, Coach D stood out—not just because he’s a 6’7” gentle giant but because of his radiant smile, his calming presence, and the inspiring way he connected with the kids.
After that season, Coach D continued training and mentoring kids in our community, including my son, who joined his AAU team when he was 9. A number of us became part of the SYO Family (Staple Youth Organization) and had the opportunity to watch our kids thrive in the supportive and inclusive community built around Coach D’s passion for youth development, basketball, and teamwork.
What’s always stood out most about Coach D is how deeply he cares about his players. His players know it. Their families know it. And that’s why they give that love and respect right back.
He also gave back off the court. From organizing local charity events to supporting underprivileged youth in Jamaica (where he grew up), Damion has always looked for ways to lift others up.
Now it’s our turn to cheer him on and lift him up.
Two months ago, Damion suffered a stroke (I just learned about it). It left him without the use of his right arm and leg. While this was a devastating blow, Damion is showing the same grit and positivity he’s always encouraged in his players. Through intense physical therapy, he’s now walking again with a leg brace and a cane. He still cannot bend his right leg and he has no control over his right arm which remains in a sling. His road to recovery will be long—but his spirit remains unbreakable.
He still has his infectious smile, especially when hearing from his players. However, he’s facing an uncertain future and doesn’t know if or when he will be able to coach again. Understandably, this has left him sad and frustrated.
While his medical expenses are thankfully covered, Damion could use some help with day-to-day living expenses and transportation costs to and from therapy. He has a 3-year old son, Alex, and providing for his family during this time has been incredibly challenging.
Whether or not Coach D has impacted your life, your child’s life, or your community in any way, it would be great if could provide support. Whether it’s through a donation, a note of encouragement, or just spreading the word—every gesture counts.
Thank you!
Gregg
