The Casa Hogar Optical Mission Team needs your help. Every two years, we go to Lurin, Peru with about 30 volunteers and 7,000 pairs of glasses to give the gift of sight to people who cannot afford a pair of glasses. Our last mission was in February 2025. Among the volunteers are 5 ophthalmologists who give eye examinations to everyone coming to the mission. Some of the patients cannot be given glasses because they are suffering from an eye disease that must first be corrected. The most common is cataracts.
This fundraiser is to pay for the surgery and post-surgery care for as many patients as we can. We have 28 referrals for cataract surgery, and the cost for a single surgery is about $900.
At the top of our list is Maura (see picture), a dear lady that lives a few blocks from Casa Hogar in a community where hardship is too common. Her shoes are worn through, and her clothes are faded by time, bearing the marks of a difficult life. Speak with her for just a moment, and you’ll discover a woman of incredible strength and compassion.
Despite her frail frame, she climbs rocky paths and crosses trash-strewn alleys to reach homes filled with people in desperate need. Her mission is simple and profound: to remind every person she meets that they are a child of God, deserving of dignity, love, and respect. She offers a listening ear, a warm smile, and a gentle touch.
Restoring Maura’s eyesight through this operation will allow her to continue being a beacon of light in a very poor community. Her story is but one in a long line of people who are waiting for your help.
