My name is Mira Tamang. I am starting this fundraiser to help my brother Niraj Tamang (23 years old) for further treatment, who is diagnosed with kidney failure due to IgA Nephropathy.
My brother Niraj Tamang moved to Canada in August 2022 with a big dream to pursue a degree in computer science, but now his life has taken a huge turn. All of his dreams shattered into millions of pieces, and he is forced to return home with two failed kidneys and no degree in hand. Currently, he is studying at Mohawk College, Hamilton, ON, Canada. He has one more semester to complete his degree and is expected to graduate in December 2025. However, on May 15, 2025, he was having significant difficulty in breathing and weakness. Therefore, his friends (roommates) called 911, and he was sent to the Emergency Department at St. Joseph’s Hospital. As soon as he arrived at the emergency department, he went into respiratory distress requiring intubation and ventilator support. After hearing this news, I went to see my brother. The doctors told us he is severely fluid overloaded (too much water in the body as the kidneys were not filtering) and has accumulated tons of waste products in the body as the kidneys were not filtering. We were also told he has pneumonia and there is some bleeding in the lung. He stayed in ICU with ventilator support for approximately 7 days. During his admission, he underwent hemodialysis every day for 10 days, and on the 12th day of hospitalization, a kidney biopsy was done to see why his kidneys were not working. Based on the kidney biopsy report, the nephrologist (kidney doctor) told us his kidneys have failed due to IgA nephropathy and he has two life-sustaining options: dialysis or a kidney transplant.
I never thought of requesting help from everyone via fundraiser, but now his health insurance told us that they will only cover the acute phase of hospital costs and will not cover further dialysis treatment from June 5, 2025. Also, the billing department at the hospital told us that to release his medical records, his bills have to be paid. Otherwise, they cannot provide medical records. Currently, he is getting dialysis 3 times a week and he will have to continue to do so until we make arrangements in Nepal. The doctor told us he will need dialysis as soon as he lands in Nepal given the long flight duration, so we are actively searching for a team of doctors and a good hospital in Nepal. Until we make arrangements, he has to stay in Canada and continue to get dialysis.
To pursue further treatment, he will need his medical records to be reviewed by the doctors in Nepal as we are thinking of a kidney transplant considering his age. He cannot travel by himself as he still feels weak and tired due to low hemoglobin levels, so my father is planning to come to Canada to assist him during travel.
From the depth of my heart, I request everyone to help us raise the funds to cover the overwhelming amount of medical costs and give him a chance to pursue a healthy life with a kidney transplant.
With everyone’s help, he has a better chance to get his life back to normal. Let’s stand together and help Niraj to fight this battle. All donations will directly go to Niraj to cover his medical costs in Canada and pursue a kidney transplant in Nepal.
