Story:
Hi, my name is [Name Withheld for Safety], and I’m reaching out to ask for support during what has been a long and painful journey of survival, recovery, and ongoing trauma.
I am a survivor of nearly four decades of domestic abuse, including a devastating gunshot wound to the face and head. I was left for dead — despite an Order of Protection — and I am still fighting for my life, health, and dignity years later.
Though the abuse spanned over 37 years of my 48-year marriage, I stayed silent out of fear — not just for myself, but for my children and grandchildren. I was threatened repeatedly: if I ever left or called for help again, my abuser said he would kill me or disfigure me so no one would want me.
He nearly succeeded.
Medical Needs:
I am in desperate need of:
Full dental reconstruction (~$40,000) due to the gunshot wound
Eye surgery, which two specialists have refused due to unresolved government legal matters
Hearing support – my left ear is nearly closed, and I’ve lost multiple hearing aids
Follow-up for a traumatic closed head injury and probable vertebral artery occlusion
Rehabilitation from brain damage, nerve damage in my leg, and spinal injuries
I have undergone surgeries on m neck, back etc, yet many conditions remain untreated due to barriers in care, especially in South Carolina. I’ve had to travel 5–6 hours out of town just to get proper evaluations.
Despite a court-ordered divorce settlement in 2022, I have not received the compensation awarded to me. Legal battles continue, and my ex-husband has yet to be held accountable. Because the case is ongoing, I must remain anonymous online for my safety and legal protection.
About Me:
I have 14½ years of education and spent my life working — including in government, education, and medical settings. I was a tutor, Sunday School teacher, gang intervention volunteer, and the organizer of a massive annual community outreach event involving 11 churches and speakers from across the Southeast. I loved serving my community, mentoring youth, and giving back. That part of me still lives, even though my body has endured so much.
How You Can Help:
I’m asking for your support — whether it’s financial, a share of this campaign, or a prayer. Every donation, no matter how small, helps me move one step closer to healing and reclaiming my life.
Your kindness means more than I can express. Thank you for standing with survivors like me who are still fighting to be seen, heard, and cared for.
With deep gratitude,
— A Survivor Still Standing
