I am a doctor of a patient with severe Thalassemia who gets blood transfusions twice a week. His hemoglobin level is 7, and he already has a very high iron overload. He has had a splenectomy and all the complications of severe Thalassemia. His growth is stunted; he weighs 60 pounds and is 50 inches tall at age 18, with frequent bone fractures. His current status is incompatible with life. Fortunately, there is a cure for his disease called gene editing, FDA-approved and approved by the European Union accrediting agency. Unfortunately, the cost is prohibitive and is out of reach for him without help. I am advocating for him as a doctor, a father of 4, and as a human being. Any help you give to this poor child will be highly rewarded by God in life and in heaven.
