ENGLISH – Help Rafael Save His Vision – Urgent Surgery Needed

We are launching this fundraising campaign in support of Rafael Antonio Henríquez Maradiaga, a devoted father, psychologist, educator, and tireless servant of his community in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

For over 28 years, Rafael has dedicated his life to helping teenagers and adults struggling with addictions, bipolar disorder, and autism. As a volunteer, he has provided counseling in his parish, becoming a spiritual guide and emotional support for many young people. His vocation has always been to help others.

His Fight Against Weill-Marchesani Syndrome

Since childhood, Rafael has lived with a rare genetic disorder known as Weill-Marchesani Syndrome, which affects the shape of the eyes and causes severe myopia and glaucoma, a dangerous rise in eye pressure that can lead to permanent vision loss.

Over the years, this condition has severely deteriorated his sight, causing several retinal detachments, a serious complication where the retina (the part of the eye responsible for capturing light) separates, like a lamp going out from the inside.

Despite this lifelong battle, Rafael continued working, supporting his community, and being a loving husband and devoted father.

On April 28, he suffered a complex detachment in his only functional eye. Although he underwent surgery using silicone oil, the procedure was unsuccessful.

What’s happening now?

Rafael urgently needs a highly specialized surgery that is not available in Honduras. Local retinal specialists agree that this complex procedure can only be performed in countries like Mexico or the United States.

If he is not operated on soon, he will lose his vision permanently.

Why does he need our help?

The first surgery completely exhausted his financial resources. In addition, due to his loss of vision, Rafael was forced to leave his position as a university professor at CEUTEC, where he can no longer support university students and patients, losing at the same time a vital source of income for his household. He is the main provider for his family.

How can you help?

Your contribution will help cover:

  • Urgent ophthalmological surgery abroad
  • Hospitalization and post-operative care
  • Medication and specialized treatment

Every donation counts.

No matter the amount, your support can make an enormous difference. Rafael has spent his life caring for the mental and emotional health of others. Now, he is fighting for his vision, for his family, and for his future.

If you are unable to donate, please help us by sharing this campaign.

Your voice can also help save his sight.

Thank you for your solidarity and support.

Disclaimer: Rafael Antonio Henríquez Maradiaga is our uncle. Given that my brother and I are organizing the campaign in the U.S (because fundraiser doesn’t support withdrawals sent to Honduras), My brother, Juan Carlos Matute Bertrand will be withdrawing the funds to his American Bank account here. The funds will be then sent to Rafael at the end of September via a wire transfer to his Honduran bank account.
