We’re reaching out to ask for support for our good friends, Malcolm and Elisa Van Dyk — a family who means so much to our community. Malcolm volunteers with the local fire department, and together with Elisa, they’ve always shown up for others with generosity and kindness. Now, it’s our turn to be there for them.
Their son, Devon, is a bright, kind-hearted young man living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) — a rare genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle weakness. Despite the daily challenges, Devon continues to find joy in the little things, especially swimming. Being in the water gives him a sense of freedom and lightness that he doesn’t get anywhere else. It’s one of the few activities that brings him comfort, confidence, and true happiness.
As his mobility has decreased, accessing lakes and beaches has become nearly impossible. That’s why we’re raising funds to purchase a Sandcruiser All-Terrain Beach Wheelchair — a specially designed chair that will allow Devon to safely and comfortably reach the shoreline and get back in the water he loves. This would be life-changing for him.
If you’re able to donate or share this page, it would mean the world to Devon and his family. We’re so grateful for the incredible support this community has already shown in helping with Devon’s transportation and accessibility needs — your kindness has made a real difference in his life. Now, with your help, we hope to give him back a piece of his independence and joy by getting him safely back to the water he loves.
Thank you so much for your love and support.
